The item can measure the height of trees.
Use a 45 deg triangle so that device is is pointing up at a 45 deg angle. If don't have 45 deg triangle, just fold a square paper diagonally. Move device until laser is pointing to top of tree. Make sure it is 45 deg with the ground. Now lower the laser so that it is horizontal with the ground. Aim laser at bottom of tree trunk and take a reading. That would be the height of the tree.
